Autumn Birdwatching in Pembrokeshire

Autumn Birdwatching in Pembrokeshire

Pembrokeshire is a great place for birdwatching even after the summer has gone

Just because the summer is has flown by (did we have one?), it doesn’t mean the birds have left. The Autumn migration can bring a few surprises - storm-tired birds get blown off course over the Atlantic and stop to rest on the Pembrokeshire coast. These areas are worth searching for Sabine’s Gull, Leaches and Storm Petrels, Great, Cory’s, and Sooty Shearwater as well as the commoner seabirds such as Kittiwake, Guillemot, Razorbill, and the occasional Puffin. St.Govan’s and Stack Rocks are two favourite spots to watch for seabirds as well as their outstanding scenery.

Meandering through the local woodlands can find pied flycatchers and wood warblers. Take a scenic walk by way of the lily ponds to Broadhaven Beach, keep a few crumbs in your pocket, the robins in the hedges are quite bold and have been known to eat from your hand. Any walk in Pembrokeshire will likely create an opportunity to watch wheeling buzzards.

Bluetits, wrens, blackbirds and jackdaws all make their home in Carew Castle. Owls nest in the ruins as well, at twilight you can sometimes catch a barn owl hunting for prey around the Castle grounds. Little owls and tawny owls have also been recorded here.

Carew’s resident swans can be seen with their cygnets in the adjoining millpond, which also attracts redshanks, curlews, common sandpipers, herons and shelducks. You can sometimes be lucky enough to spot kingfishers near the Mill in late summer/early autumn.
