Dog-friendly Beaches in Pembrokeshire
Here in Pembrokeshire, we’re spoilt for choice with our array of sandy beaches. From the dunes in Freshwater West to the surf spot at Manorbier and with over 186 miles of coastal path there’s a beach for everyone – including your four-legged friends! We’ve put together our top dog-friendly beaches in Pembrokeshire which are a must visit whilst you’re on holiday here!
Glen Beach
In the seaside village of Saundersfoot you’ll find Glen Beach. It’s dog-friendly all year around and the perfect place for a dip in the sea with your pooch. Glen Beach is backed by low cliffs and there’s plenty of rock pools to explore. The best way to access Glen beach is to head up St Bride’s Hill and take a left turn into The Glen or why not stay within a stone’s throw of the beach at either Glendale or Sunningdale.
Wiseman’s Bridge
Situated just outside Saundersfoot is Wiseman’s Bridge, a rocky cove backed by a pebble bank popular with SUP and canoers. Wiseman’s Bridge beach sits between Coppet Hall and Amroth where you can walk across to both when the tides low (check the tide times before visiting). It’s dog- friendly all year round and you’ll find Wiseman’s Bridge Inn, the perfect pit stop for a bite to eat or drink in the sunshine. For properties within walking distance Wiseman’s Bridge check out The Cottage or Solace.
Freshwater West
Just outside of Pembroke is Freshwater West. Home to ‘Dobby’s grave’ for the Harry Potter fans, a wide stretched, sandy beach backed by sand dunes and another surfer’s paradise here in Pembrokeshire. With nearly a mile long stretch of sand to walk on it’s the perfect spot for your four- legged friend to have a run around and better still it’s dog-friendly all year round with no restrictions. Freshwater West has been featured in many Hollywood films including Robin Hood, Their Finest and Harry Potter and the deathly hallows.
Manorbier Bay
Situated in the quiet village of Manorbier you’ll find the beautiful Manorbier Bay. Popular with surfers and SUP when the tides are right and dog-friendly all year round – yay! There is a national park car park situated there and epic views of Manorbier Castle itself. It’s worth a walk onto the coastal path to take in the breath-taking views Pembrokeshire has to offer.
South Beach, Tenby
The top dog-friendly beach in Tenby is most certainly South Beach. It is a mile and a half long, backed by sand dunes and is the perfect place to get a view of Caldey Island. There are dog restrictions in place to the left of the beach towards Castle Beach between 1 st May and 30 th September, but dogs can roam free on the right side right up until Giltar Point. Head to Salty’s Shack to treat your four- legged friend to a dog-friendly ice cream. It has great access to the coastal path; you can join it at the Penally end and walk all the way to Lydstep taking in the spectacular views of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path – just remember to keep dogs on leads if you decide to tackle the coast path.
Monkstone
A hidden nook in between [Saundersfoot]https://www.puffincottageholidays.co.uk/cottages-in-saundersfoot) and Tenby is Monkstone beach which can be accessed via the coastal path. It’s a quiet, remote beach which gives you the opportunity to escape the crowds and is dog-friendly all year round. You can access it by a permissive footpath through Trevayne Farm or by joining the coastal path in Saundersfoot. Before you go, check the tide times, and take care not to be cut off by high tide as they can come in very quickly.
Freshwater East
You’ll find Freshwater East beach just outside the village of Lamphey. This wide, sandy, dog-friendly beach is perfect for dog walks and the ideal spot for a picnic. It’s backed by sand dunes which host a local nature reserve called ‘The Burrows’ and is the perfect dog-friendly beach all year round. If you’d like to be within walking distance of Freshwater East beach then Freshwater Bay is the perfect holiday cottage for you.
Coppet Hall
This sandy beach won a Blue Flag in 2022 and it’s clear to see why with it’s wide-stretched, flat, golden sand and easy access to Wiseman’s Bridge and Saundersfoot when the tides allow. There are dog restrictions in place so please take care and ensure you read the appropriate signs. Pooches are free to roam from the central steps towards Saundersfoot (to the right if you were looking at the sea).
Barafundle Bay
This award-winning, secluded, dog-friendly beach is probably one of Pembrokeshire’s worst kept secrets. It’s been called one of the best beaches in the world and is accessed by walking half a mile across the clifftops from Stackpole. There’s a steep incline from Stackpole Quay up to the cliff, then once you have walked along the clifftops (taking in the stunning views as you walk) you’ll come to a steep decline of more steps – this one is not for the faint-hearted! Barafundle Bay is dog-friendly all year round, but it is recommended that dogs are kept on a lead when crossing the clifftops due to the steep drop at the cliff side.
