Sea + Steam

Sea + Steam

Sea + Steam is a Mobile wood-fired sauna located in the seaside village of Saundersfoot on the Pembrokeshire Coast. The sauna is situated in the centre of the village, overlooking the award-winning blue flag beach, giving you a wonderful views of the sea and Monkstone Point, Amroth and Worms Head in the Gower through the large picture window, while you relax and enjoy the benefits. It is open all year round for rain or shine rejuvenation.

Bryony and Kerry had a dream of bringing a sauna to their community to help people with their physical and mental health. Their aim is simple, to connect people with the coastline and support people with their health and wellbeing through Sea + Steam.

How to sauna

Some people go for a quick dip in the sea, some people just sauna. Some people swim before, some after. Some people go for a walk, some grab a coffee, some stand up paddleboard and some enjoy the view. It’s entirely up to you, how you want to sauna.

My experience

All I can say is WOW, the whole experience from start to finish was amazing. Bryony was so friendly and on hand to answer any questions and make you feel at ease before, during and afterwards.

Before the session, I booked online and filled in the waiver for myself and family members who were joining me. It was very informative and comprehensive to ensure our safety was priority.

We were advised about the Sauna Safety and asked to bring two towels, one to sit on in the sauna and one for use outside of the sauna, as the benches can get hot, so sitting on a towel will make your session more comfortable, you must wear swim wear and bring plenty of water to help keep you hydrated. You sweat a lot in the sauna, so you need to take on plenty of extra fluids to help rehydrate and flush out those toxins.

What to bring tells you all these things, as well as to bring comfortable loose clothing to change into after your sauna session and wear sandals, water shoes or sliders for ease.

When it was time for my session, I was unsure of how it all worked, but after arriving early and speaking to Bryony she put my mind at rest. She explained that first time users, are recommended to stay in the sauna for 5-10 minutes and work up to 15-20 minutes, but I booked a private family session for 50 minutes! Bryony assured me that it was fine but to make sure we allowed our bodies to cool down after about 10 minutes, we did this by standing outside the sauna, by the changing room with the door slightly ajar for some fresh cool sea air, we repeated this within our allocated time frame. Bryony said that everyone reacts differently to the heat, so it is important to listen to your body, starting small and building up your time. But of course, we definitely made sure we… sat, relaxed, breathed and enjoyed the view.

Afterwards, we all felt so relaxed, and I slept soundly that night too. I would recommend everyone try this amazing experience not only for the health benefits but for some valuable time for yourself to rest and recharge your batteries.

Benefits

A wood burning sauna experience can help you feel more relaxed, boost your energy levels, and aid in pain relief. Your blood flow increases as your blood vessels relax and dilate, which can help relieve sore muscles. The physical benefits of saunas have long been widely recognized to aid with detoxification, improvements in circulation, sleep and skin conditions.

Studies show that saunas can help decrease inflammation and chronic pain associated with arthritis and other chronic musculoskeletal diseases like ankylosing spondylitis, reducing pain, stiffness, and fatigue. Research has shown using a sauna on a regular basis has a significant reduction in the rates of cardiovascular disease, dementia and depression.
