What's Your New Year's Resolution

ARE YOU READY TO USHER IN THE TURN OF THE YEAR WITH A “REFRESHING PLUNGE” INTO BRACING WATERS

The historical convention of taking a frosty dip over the festive period, one of the country’s stranger traditions, has been ongoing across Britain for more than half a century. The oldest dates to 1823.

January 1st, 2025 marks the celebration of Saundersfoot’s 39th New Years Day Swim. Originally taking place on Boxing Day in 1984 with 17 brave souls taking to the icy water to raise money for charity, the Swim [NYDS] (NYDS - Saundersfoot Festivities Ltd) has become a fast favourite with participants and spectators alike. John Joseph and Chris Williams were a part of the original group and have participated every year since then.

What started as a small group of swimmers has grown to over 2000 courageous souls going for a chilly dip in 2024.

Organised by Saundersfoot Festivities, the main drive for the event back in 1984 was fund-raising, and this tradition continues. It has become the biggest occasion on the Saundersfoot’s social calendar and has helped raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for local and national charities.

Obscure traditions take place all over the world, mostly to help bring good luck for the coming year, raising money for charity must count as bringing luck.

In Denmark you might find broken plates outside your door as a wish from a neighbour for a fruitful year for you.

In Spain if you eat a grape for every strike of the clock at midnight that will ensure you 12 lucky months ahead.

In Romania dressing up as a bear and dancing in the streets bring good fortune.

In Japan, the tradition is to toll a bell 108 times to “ring” in good luck.

However you decide to celebrate this year, here’s to a prosperous 2025.
